The Center for ReIntegration – a non-profit organization committed to helping people with mental illnesses pursue a meaningful life through reintegration — the process by which a person with a mental illness finds meaningful work, restores his or her relationships, and moves toward independent living. The Coalition of Voluntary Mental Health Agencies, Inc. – an umbrella advocacy organization of New York’s behavioral health community, representing over 100 non-profit community-based behavioral health agencies that serve more than 350,000 clients in the five boroughs of New York City and its environs. If someone you know (or you) experienced symptoms that cannot be controlled (or you believe to have been denied help for these problems), and do not know what to do, TCA would urge you to contact one of the following resources:
911 — the HotLine to local ER’s for men and women experiencing psychiatric emergencies at any time of day or night. Local Mobile Crisis Units, usually attached to these hospitals and Police or Fire Departments, are trained to respond immediately to such crises and handle them appropriately, often transporting at risk consumers to the ER’s for evaluation and treatment.
MHA of Essex County as well as other local MHA’s – the provider of a variety of services and treatment options for ongoing mental health needs. (MHAofEssexCounty.org)
Community Health Law Project of Essex County, South Orange, NJ – a not-for-profit advocacy organization for consumers who have been discriminated against, denied benefits, etc. (CHLPofEssexCounty.org)
NYC Department of Mental Health & Hospitals – Consumer Affairs – for filing complaints about discrimination, neglect or abuse suffered by consumers. (212-219-5391)
Manhattan Youth and Family Services (MYFS) – a legal not-for-profit for appeals to prevent interruption of benefits, etc. (212-417-3800)
NYC Burden Center on Aging – to report elder abuse. (212-879-7400)
National Alliance for Mentally Ill (NAMI) — a consumer- and family-driven organization, provides supportive meetings and advocates for the mentally ill at the local, state and national level. NAMI meetings are available on the county level, and attendance is voluntary. (nami.org)
Fountain House, Inc. — a not-for-profit foundation established in 1948 to serve men and women suffering from mental illness through its well-developed programs of psychiatric and vocational rehabilitation in the community. A consumer-conducted tour and a meeting afterwards to debrief with members and staff, can be scheduled by calling the contact number. (fountainhouse.org)
